On 16 May 2021, the European Commission (EC) appointed two new members of the Group of Chief Scientific Advisors − Eva Zažímalová (Professor and President of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) and professor Eric F. Lambin. Both were nominated by European Research Organisations and selected by independent Identification Committee. They replace Professor Carina Keskitalo and Paul Nurs and should remain in office for three years. During this term, they should focus on energy, cancer screening and resilience to crises such as pandemic.

The European Commission’s Group of Chief Scientific Advisors was established in 2015 and launched in January 2016 with an aim to support EU policy makers and to provide them with independent scientific advice and improve the interaction between policy-making and scientific advice. The group is composed of highly qualified and experienced scientists from the natural and social sciences, who meet several times a year in plenary sessions, resulting in open, independent and transparent scientific opinions and advice, in consultation with other experts and stakeholders and in close cooperation with the JRC and with the support of the RTD staff.
