The EC issued a working document on investment into Hydrogen Strategy

The document describes the obstacles and opportunities in the future of hydrogen technologies.

The European Commission's document, published on 24 January 2022, presents the current situation in the field of hydrogen technology and investment instruments aimed at fully bringing these technologies to market in the near future. It is hydrogen that is set to have a major role in meeting one of the goals of the European Green Deal: finding a substitute for fossil fuels, which requires creating a network for the production and distribution of clean hydrogen. The document also contributes to the pilot action of the new European Research Area on Green Hydrogen, which aims to design and implement a joint strategic research and innovation plan for green hydrogen.

Today, Europe is at the forefront of the production and promotion of clean hydrogen technologies, mainly due to the sharp increase in the capacity of electrolysers, hydrogen charging stations and hydrogen valleys. According to the working document, this leadership can only be maintained through increased research and innovation efforts at European and national level, together with a strong element of international cooperation.

As the document also mentions, Europe is a leading manufacturer of electrolysers for the production of clean hydrogen. EU investment in research and innovation of € 150 million since 2008 has enabled a 200-fold increase in electrolyser capacity to today's 20 MW. By 2025, the goal is to expand this capacity to 100 MW. More efficient and cost-effective electrolysers will increase the production of large volumes of clean hydrogen to help decarbonise European industry.

Synergies between Horizon Europe and its predecessor, the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, the European Green Deal and other programs and institutions will help to promote hydrogen investment.
