The European Commission has launched a third call for small-scale projects proposals under the Innovation Fund.

The call will support projects in the areas of renewable energy, decarbonisation of energy-intensive industries, energy storage and carbon capture, use and storage. Supported projects will receive 100 million EUR in grant funding with a capital expenditure between 2.5 – 7.5 EUR. The Innovation Fund can finance up to 60 % of a small project's total capital expenditure. Projects will be evaluated based on the following criteria: potential to avoid greenhouse gas emissions, innovation potential, financial, technical and operational maturity, potential for scaling up and cost-efficiency.

Projects can be implemented in any EU member state, Iceland or Norway. The call is open until 19 September 2023. The results of the evaluation will be published in the first quarter of 2024. According to the preliminary schedule, it is expected that the selected projects will be awarded grants in June 2024.

Within the calls of Innovation Fund, the European Commission invites unsuccessful projects to resubmit their applications. The European Investment Bank can help them to improve their applications by granting the support to those projects that have been evaluated as promising, but at the same time are not developed enough to receive the grant.
